BOE Gets New Medals at the 2009 Grand Harvest Awards

By Alie

Great news!  We’ve just received word that BOE wines have won two new medals at last week’s 2009 Grand Harvest Awards tasting in Napa!

  • Brooklyn Oenology 2007 Chardonnay - Silver
  • Brooklyn Oenology 2005 Merlot - Bronze

Our flagship wines are rackin’ them up!  I’m so excited, to say the least - BOE is still a young winery, so this is just so damn flattering!

Try them for yourself!  The Stores page lists all the locations where you can buy our wines.  We’re also going to be pouring these, along with the rest of the lineup, at the New York Wine Expo this weekend at the Jacob Javits Center.  The events page has all the details for the show.  Drop by and say hello!

The WORK Gallery/Wassiac I Heart Art Benefit Auction

By Alie

My pal Walker Waugh held a small works art auction called” I Heart Art” on Valentine’s day at his artspace, The WORK Gallery, in the Columbia Street Waterfront neighborhood.  I met Walker at our local coffee spot, the Coffee Den, where you can find him servin’ up hot joe in the early mornings.

This was the first time he had done an auction like this, and he collaborated with the Wassaic Project in the Hudson Valley, whose founders he knows from college.  Let me tell you, this show they put together was fantastic!  Almost the entire show comprised of small works, all priced for $60 each.  Additionally there was a silent auction of a half-dozen medium-size works.  Some of the pieces were made by local artists, but many also came from around the country.  Not only was it a well-curated show, but it was also really well arranged inside the gallery.  The media ranged from drawing to painting to collage, video, and sculpture, and pieces were grouped together either by a color theme or a a thread in their subject matter.  There was so much to look at and discover that I kept exiting and re-entering the gallery to go back and see what else I didn’t see the last time I looked.

Walker also throws a damn good party, complete with a drum fire on the sidewalk (good thing he has a couple of friends in the local Engine just two doors down - ?!?), strong hot toddies (an excellent technique for loosening up people to buy art - also good for selling wine - I even know this trick, and I bought three pieces today), cookies and brownies from Sweet Tooth of the Tiger, and music out of the back of a U-Haul just outside in the street.  I donated a case of wine to the case too.  As you’ll see in the pictures below, the event was packed and spilled out into the streets on this awesomely sunny Valentine’s afternoon.

We’re written up in today’s NY Post!

By Alie

Another great piece of press for us today!  Carla Spartos of the New York Post wrote an article for today’s Pulse section about locally produced libations, with a paragraph for Brooklyn Oenology!  Here’s the link to the online version of the article:

New York Post, “Brew York City” article, Feb. 15th 2009

It’s too bad I can’t show you the print version here (I’ll have to scan it in and then add to this post), because it was so cool; the front page of the section shows the Statue of Liberty on the left, against the backdrop of the downtown Manhattan skyline, and, according to this picture, half of Manhattan downtown is constructed of ginormous BOE bottles.  Right front and center is a 50-story tall 2007 Chardonnay bottle, and there are other bottles sticking up amongst the buildings.  Hee-hee!

The article also talks about Bridget, aka the Bridge Urban Winery tasting room over in Williamsburg, which right now has the Motley Cru on hand.  But the bigger reason to know about Bridget is that they are the Brooklyn equivalent to the now defunct Vintage New York; they have a well-chosen selection of New York wines available for sale and tasting, alongside their own wines under Bridge Winery label.  They also have a whole menu of New York foods to go along with those tasty New York wines.

Buttermilk Channel, which is a fairly new restaurant, and happens to be in my neighborhood, is also noted in the article for having a beer selection sourced entirely from New York, and for its New York-dominated American wine list, including our 2005 Merlot.

But also read through the whole article, because there are some really cool other beverages being made in our area.  Of particular note to me is brewery Kelso of Brooklyn, which is run by my pal and brewmaster Kelly Taylor, who is also the brewmaster for Heartland Brewery.  If you haven’t tried his beer yet, go out and find some ASAP.  He does this great small-batch beers, and experiments with all kinds of yeasts and barrels for aging.  He also does custom brews for a few places around the city, some of which are also described in this Post article.  Oh, and my favorite thing about Kelso is their motto:  Beer Helps.  ’nough said.

River Barrel, Bar Tano, and Perch Cafe now have BOE wines!

By Alie

We’ve got three new restaurants carrying Brooklyn Oenology this week!

First is River Barrel, which is in our neighborhood, Greenpoint.  They’re serving up simple but soulful brunch, lunch, and dinner, and all of their dozen or so wines are served by the glass - which now includes the 2006 Social Club Red, and 2007 Viognier!  River Barrel is location at 160 Franklin Street.

Second is Bar Tano, which has got great speak-easy/Parisian/European style, and functions as both bar and restaurant, with a fairly priced international menu and wine at great prices.  Their BOE selections are the 2006 Social Club Red and 2006 Motley Cru.  Bar Tano is at 457 3rd Avenue at 9th Street in the Gowanus.

Perch Cafe, over in Park Slope at 365 5th Avenue at 5th Street, just brought in the 2007 Social Club White for their by-the-glass wine list.  Perch has creative comforting breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, and yummy coffee too.
